Maypole 2016
The Slovak Community in Sydney has celebrated the traditional raising of the Maypole for the sixth time.
And what a crowd! We’ve actually had a full house. As usual, all generations were present, from the oldest to the youngest. Especially the kids, with significantly more youngsters present then usual, have effortlessly planted a family atmosphere flavour into our traditional festivities.
The evening started with a typical Slovak menu, such as a homemade treska, roast duck with cabbage and dumpling, sausages, goulash with bread and steamed plum dumplings topped by excellent cakes and pastries. Not to mention our traditional famous spirits and beer.
Festivities have been opened by a lovely performance of our children’s folk dance ensemble Stonožka, followed by the traditional maypole raising festivities. A large throng of wannabe singers and dancers joined the proceedings and danced to and sang many traditional Slovak songs under the maypole with unbridled joy, making this occasion that much more special.
The main entertainment fun started with the Slovak folk group Kukabura. It was splendid to marvel at live bass tones, violin, cymbalo and piano accordion adorned by a beautiful female folk voice.
Afterward DJ Daniel overfilled the dance floor by playing plethora of well known Slovak melodies and hits, which got everybody’s feet tapping.
It goes without saying that Majáles wouldn’t be same without the raffle, making twenty happy people winning them valuable prizes.
This was once again such an excellent event, thanks to many selfless organizers and volunteers, who have helped in the kitchen and with event preparation in general. However, we can’t forget to express our gratitude to all our patrons, who have created such spirited celebratory atmosphere filled with their vibrant energy.
