Readings<\/strong>: <\/b>First Kings 17:17-24; Psalms 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11, 12, 13; Galatians 1:11-19; Luke 7:11-17;<\/b><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The lesson of this encounter between Jesus and the widow of Nain is so simple that we may miss it:\u00a0God cares<\/b>. \u201cDo not cry,\u201d Jesus tells her, as if to say, \u201cI can\u2019t bear<\/b>\u00a0to see you suffer like this. Let me help. \u201dThis woman had lost her husband, now she has lost her only son \u2013 she is\u00a0alone<\/b>, suffering without hope. And then she meets Jesus, and he simply\u00a0can\u2019t let her suffer alone<\/b>, and so he performs a miracle. No one\u00a0asked<\/b>\u00a0him to perform this miracle; he\u00a0took the initiative<\/b>\u00a0to intervene.<\/p>\n

The Christian God is not a God who remains\u00a0aloof<\/b>: he does not\u00a0keep his distance<\/b>; he cares\u00a0too much<\/b>\u00a0about us,\u00a0in spite of<\/b>\u00a0our sinfulness, weakness, and brokenness. This is the message of\u00a0every page<\/b>\u00a0of the Gospels, from\u00a0Christmas<\/b>\u00a0to\u00a0Calvary<\/b>:\u00a0God cares<\/b>; he has compassion on us; he suffers with us, giving\u00a0meaning<\/b>\u00a0to our pain.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we\u00a0feel<\/b>\u00a0like we are suffering alone, as if God\u00a0doesn\u2019t<\/b>\u00a0care. Sometimes Christ seems\u00a0far away<\/b>, because he doesn\u2019t give us the\u00a0miracle<\/b>\u00a0we long for. But we can\u2019t let those feelings\u00a0deceive<\/b>\u00a0us. This widow did not know about\u00a0Calvary<\/b>. She had never seen a\u00a0crucifix<\/b>. The\u00a0only<\/b>\u00a0way Christ had to show her his compassion was through a miracle.<\/p>\n

But we\u00a0have<\/b>\u00a0seen Calvary. We\u00a0know<\/b>\u00a0to what depths God\u2019s compassion has gone. And we can always go to the\u00a0Tabernacle<\/b>, where we find the Eucharist, the\u00a0living memorial<\/b>\u00a0of Calvary \u2013 the revelation of God\u2019s\u00a0unfathomable compassion<\/b>, his \u201csuffering with\u201d each and every one of us.<\/p>\n

Truly, we\u00a0never<\/b>\u00a0have to suffer alone. And so, when we\u00a0choose to do so anyway<\/b>, we not only\u00a0increase<\/b>\u00a0our own pain, but we double\u00a0Christ\u2019s\u00a0<\/b>as well, by turning a\u00a0blind eye<\/b>\u00a0to his cross.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
