Jesus allows this sinful woman to come close<\/b> to him, to have direct contact<\/b> with him. \u00a0And then he administers his forgiveness through real words<\/b> spoken with a real, audible<\/b> voice. This was incomprehensible<\/b> to Simon the Pharisee. \u00a0First of all, only God<\/b> had the authority to forgive sins (and Simon didn’t think Jesus was God). But even more than that, the whole encounter was too mundane<\/b>, too down-to-earth<\/b>. Simon was convinced that God was too spiritual<\/b> for that kind of thing. Not even a prophet<\/b> would let such a sinful woman come that close, would lower himself<\/b> to that level.<\/p>\n

And yet, Jesus is glad<\/b> that she has come. \u00a0Jesus knew that it was hard<\/b> for the woman to admit her weakness and neediness in front of other people. But it was the best thing<\/b> for her to do. Only in that context was she able to express physically, humanly<\/b>, through her tears and the ointment, her sorrow <\/b>for her sins, her trust<\/b> and confidence<\/b> in his mercy. And only in that context was Jesus able to speak audibly<\/b> and unmistakably<\/b> his words of love<\/b> and forgiveness<\/b>.<\/p>\n

After this encounter, she would never have to doubt<\/b> God’s forgiveness. \u00a0She could always point back to that specific moment,<\/b> in real time and space,<\/b> as her new beginning. If she had been an angel, she wouldn’t have wanted<\/b> to show her love and repentance with tears and anointing<\/b>. If she had been an angel, it would have been appropriate for God to speak directly<\/b> to her heart without any human mediation<\/b>.<\/p>\n

But she wasn’t an angel. And neither are we<\/b>. We have the same need<\/b> she had. And God knows it. That’s why he has given us the sacrament of confession<\/b>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
