Celebration of The Ascension of the Lord
In his homily Fr Stephan Gerdes reflected on today’s celebration of The Ascension of the Lord:
When the Lord ascended to heaven, his disciples had to let go of Jesus again. Just 43 days ago the Lord was taken from them on Good Friday. Now, for a second time the Lord is taken away from the disciples as he returns to his father in heaven. It must have been a traumatic experience for the disciples and so they stare into the sky hoping to find the Lord there.
The 2 men i white remind them that the Lord is not above the sky but in heaven which is among us here and now, in our communities and our hearts. Heaven is not a location somewhere but everywhere where God is. As Jesus said: where 2 or 3 are gathered in my name I am among them.
